Juneteenth

Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, is a U.S. federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. The date marks the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union Army General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people in the state were free, more than two years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation had technically freed enslaved people in Confederate territory. Texas, as the most remote Confederate state, had seen limited enforcement of the proclamation, and Granger's announcement, backed by the presence of Union troops, finally made emancipation a practical reality there. The name "Juneteenth" blends "June" and "nineteenth," and formerly enslaved people in Texas began celebrating the date almost immediately, with early observances including prayer services, readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, and communal meals. The tradition spread as Black Texans migrated to other states over the following century, and Texas became the first state to make it an official holiday in 1980. Following renewed national attention on racial justice in 2020, Congress passed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021, making it the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983. Modern celebrations include cookouts, parades, educational programs, and reflection on the ongoing legacy of slavery and its abolition.
