Father's Day

Father's Day, observed on the third Sunday of June in the United States, honors fathers, celebrates fatherhood, and recognizes paternal bonds and influence in family and society. The holiday's modern American origins are generally credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, who, inspired by the recent establishment of Mother's Day and wanting to honor her own father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children alone after his wife's death, organized the first Father's Day celebration in 1910. Despite this early start, Father's Day took much longer than Mother's Day to gain national recognition, partly because the holiday's commercial and sentimental framing initially struck some Americans, including many men, as awkward or overly sentimental for a father-focused occasion, and various competing attempts to establish similar holidays, including a short-lived "Father's Day" promoted by trade groups selling menswear, created confusion. President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in 1966, and President Richard Nixon signed it into permanent law as a national holiday in 1972, finally granting it the same official federal recognition long afforded to Mother's Day. Today, the holiday is marked with cards, gifts, and family gatherings, often centered around outdoor activities or a special meal honoring fathers and father figures.
