Bill of Rights Day

Bill of Rights Day, observed on December 15th, commemorates the 1791 ratification of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, collectively known as the Bill of Rights, which established fundamental protections for individual liberties including freedom of speech, religion, and the press, along with protections against unreasonable searches, self-incrimination, and cruel or unusual punishment. The amendments were proposed largely in response to concerns raised by Anti-Federalists during the Constitution's original ratification debates, who argued that the document as initially written failed to adequately protect individual citizens from potential government overreach, with figures like Thomas Jefferson advocating strongly for an explicit bill of rights despite some Federalists' concerns that enumerating specific rights might inadvertently suggest citizens possessed no rights beyond those explicitly listed.
