Alabama Day

Alabama Day, observed on December 14th, commemorates Alabama's admission to the Union as the 22nd U.S. state in 1819, following a territorial period during which the region saw substantial population growth driven by settlers moving into the fertile lands of the Deep South, often displacing Indigenous nations including the Creek, Cherokee, and Choctaw through forced removal and land cession treaties. Alabama's statehood came during a significant period of American westward and southward expansion, as the young nation continued adding new states following the Louisiana Purchase and subsequent territorial acquisitions, with cotton agriculture, powered substantially through the labor of enslaved people, quickly becoming the backbone of Alabama's early economy and driving significant population and wealth growth in the antebellum decades leading up to the Civil War. The state's name is believed to derive from the Alabama people, a Muscogee-speaking Indigenous nation who inhabited the region along the Alabama River long before European settlement, though the exact etymological meaning remains somewhat debated among linguists and historians.
