Trooping the Colour

Trooping the Colour is the ceremonial parade marking the British monarch's official birthday, traditionally held on a Saturday in mid-June regardless of the sovereign's actual birth date, a practice begun because Britain's often poor weather made an official summer date more reliable for an outdoor military spectacle than many monarchs' real birthdays. The ceremony dates back to the 17th century, when regimental flags, or 'colours,' were displayed and paraded before troops so soldiers could recognize their unit's colours in the confusion of battle, a practical military tradition later transformed into a formal royal celebration during the reign of George III. The modern parade involves over 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses, and 400 musicians marching from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade, culminating in an RAF flypast watched by the Royal Family from the palace balcony. A different regiment of the Household Division 'troops' its colour each year on a rotating basis. The event is one of the most significant set-piece ceremonies in the British royal calendar, broadcast live and drawing large crowds along The Mall, and serves as a key moment of pageantry showcasing the pomp associated with the British monarchy to a global audience.
