Summer Bank Holiday

The Summer Bank Holiday, also called the August Bank Holiday, falls on the last Monday of August in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, giving the population one final long weekend before autumn. Scotland observes its own August bank holiday on the first Monday of the month instead, a divergence rooted in differing regional traditions around harvest and market days. The holiday was originally created by the Bank Holidays Act 1871 as the first Monday in August, but was moved to its current late-August position in 1971 as part of the same reforms that repositioned the Spring Bank Holiday, aiming to spread bank holidays more evenly across the year and avoid clustering too many near the start of August. The long weekend has become closely associated with the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe's largest street festival, which culminates in its main parade on the bank holiday Monday in west London, drawing over a million visitors to celebrate Caribbean culture and music. It's also a peak weekend for music festivals, seaside trips, and family outings, though notoriously prone to unpredictable British weather. For retailers, it marks one of the last major sales weekends of the summer season.
