Mothering Sunday

Mothering Sunday, the United Kingdom's equivalent of Mother's Day, falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, making it considerably earlier in the year than the American Mother's Day held in May. Its origins are religious rather than commercial: the day traditionally marked when Christians returned to their home or 'mother' church for a special service, and it later became customary for young people working away from home, particularly domestic servants, to be given the day off to visit their families and mothers, often bringing a simnel cake, a rich fruit cake decorated with marzipan balls. The secular gift-giving customs associated with Mothering Sunday today largely developed in the 20th century, influenced by the American Mother's Day movement, though the UK deliberately retained its distinct Lenten date and older religious name rather than adopting the U.S. holiday wholesale. Modern celebrations typically involve flowers, cards, and family meals, with many churches still holding special Mothering Sunday services where children present posies to their mothers and congregation members. Because its date is tied to Easter rather than a fixed calendar day, Mothering Sunday can fall anywhere between early March and early April.
