Commonwealth Day

Commonwealth Day is observed on the second Monday of March across the 56 member states of the Commonwealth of Nations, a voluntary association of mostly former British territories that today spans every inhabited continent and roughly a third of the world's population. The day originated as Empire Day in 1902, initially celebrated on Queen Victoria's birthday to foster loyalty to the British Empire, before being renamed Commonwealth Day in 1958 and later moved to its current March date in 1977 to align celebrations across member nations regardless of local school terms and seasons. Central to the modern observance is a multi-faith service traditionally held at Westminster Abbey in London, attended by the British monarch as Head of the Commonwealth, alongside the reading of the Commonwealth Charter and a special message broadcast to all member countries. Each year's celebrations are built around a specific theme chosen by the Commonwealth Secretariat, addressing issues like youth empowerment, sustainability, or peace. Schools across Commonwealth countries often mark the day with flag-raising ceremonies and lessons about shared history and values. Unlike most UK observances on this list, Commonwealth Day's significance extends well beyond Britain itself, uniting nations from Canada to Australia to Nigeria.
