World Cotton Day

World Cotton Day, observed annually on October 7th, recognizes cotton's enormous importance to global trade, agriculture, textile manufacturing, and the livelihoods of tens of millions of farmers and workers worldwide, particularly in developing economies. Established in 2019 through an initiative led by several African cotton-producing countries in cooperation with the World Trade Organization and other international bodies, the observance highlights cotton's role as one of the most economically significant agricultural commodities globally, supporting entire national economies in regions including West Africa, South Asia, and parts of the Americas. Cotton has been cultivated and processed into textiles for thousands of years across multiple ancient civilizations independently, including in the Indus Valley, ancient Egypt, and pre-Columbian Americas, reflecting the fiber's longstanding value for producing breathable, versatile fabric. The modern global cotton industry faces significant challenges, including price volatility affecting smallholder farmers, environmental concerns related to water usage and pesticide application in conventional cotton farming, and ongoing efforts to promote more sustainable and ethical production practices throughout the complex international supply chain connecting cotton farms to finished textile products. World Cotton Day promotes international cooperation on cotton-related trade policy, sustainable farming practices, and continued market access for cotton-producing developing nations. The observance is marked with international conferences, trade discussions, and educational initiatives highlighting cotton's economic and cultural significance worldwide.
