World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day, observed annually on December 1st, is an international day dedicated to raising awareness of the ongoing HIV/AIDS pandemic and honoring the millions of people worldwide who have died from AIDS-related illnesses since the epidemic began. First observed in 1988, it was the first-ever global health awareness day, established by the World Health Organization to encourage governments, health organizations, and individuals to unite in the fight against HIV, promote HIV prevention and education, and combat the stigma and discrimination that people living with HIV have long faced. The day holds particular symbolic significance as it falls at the end of the calendar year, offering a moment for reflection on the epidemic's continued global impact even as significant medical advances, including effective antiretroviral therapy, have transformed HIV from a near-certain death sentence into a manageable chronic condition for those with access to treatment. The iconic red ribbon, first used in 1991, remains the universal symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness and solidarity with those affected by the disease. Despite substantial progress in reducing AIDS-related deaths and new infections globally over recent decades, significant disparities in access to prevention, testing, and treatment persist across different regions and populations, particularly in parts of sub-Saharan Africa. World AIDS Day is marked through educational campaigns, memorial services, fundraising events, and public health initiatives promoting HIV testing and prevention worldwide.
