V-J Day

Victory over Japan Day, commonly known as V-J Day, commemorates the formal signing of Japan's surrender aboard the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, an event that officially brought World War II to its conclusion. While Japan had announced its intention to surrender on August 15th following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, several more days were needed to arrange the formal ceremony and finalize surrender terms with Allied representatives. The ceremony aboard the battleship, presided over by General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, brought together representatives from Japan and the major Allied nations to sign the Instrument of Surrender, formally ending nearly six years of the deadliest conflict in human history. The distinction between August 15th, sometimes observed separately as the anniversary of Japan's surrender announcement, and September 2nd, the date of the formal signing, has led to some regional variation in how and when V-J Day is commemorated across different countries. In the United States, V-J Day has traditionally been marked with solemn remembrance ceremonies honoring veterans and the immense sacrifices made during the war, along with historical reflection on the conflict's global impact and the beginning of the postwar era that reshaped international relations for decades to come.
