St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day, observed March 17th, commemorates Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, on the traditionally observed date of his death around 461 AD. Patrick was not originally Irish; he was born in Roman Britain and, according to his own writings, was kidnapped as a teenager and taken to Ireland as an enslaved shepherd before escaping years later, eventually returning to Ireland as a Christian missionary bishop credited with playing a major role in spreading Christianity across the island. For centuries in Ireland, March 17th was observed primarily as a solemn religious feast day, and Irish law actually required pubs to close on the holiday until the restriction was lifted in the 1970s, a striking contrast to the holiday's modern reputation for festive, alcohol-associated celebration. That festive, parade-centered version of the holiday actually developed first in America rather than Ireland, with the earliest recorded St. Patrick's Day parade held in New York City in 1762, organized by Irish soldiers serving in the British military, and Irish-American communities expanded the tradition significantly through the 19th and 20th centuries as a way to celebrate Irish heritage and build community visibility and political influence in the U.S. Common symbols associated with the day, including shamrocks, tied to a legend of Patrick using the three-leafed plant to explain the Christian Holy Trinity, and the color green, have become globally recognized markers of the holiday. On St. Patrick's Day, people celebrate with parades, wearing green, and Irish-themed food and drink.
