Red Planet Day

Red Planet Day, observed annually on November 28th, commemorates the launch of NASA's Mariner 4 spacecraft in 1964, the first mission to successfully complete a flyby of Mars and transmit close-up images of another planet's surface back to Earth. After a roughly seven-and-a-half month journey through space, Mariner 4 passed within approximately 6,000 miles of the Martian surface the following July, capturing 21 grainy but historically significant photographs that revealed a cratered, moon-like terrain, dramatically revising scientific expectations about the possibility of life on Mars, which some earlier speculation had suggested might harbor vegetation or even more advanced life forms.
