National Drink Wine Day

National Drink Wine Day, observed February 18th, celebrates one of the oldest alcoholic beverages made by humans. Archaeological evidence of winemaking dates back roughly 6,000 to 8,000 years to the South Caucasus region, particularly present-day Georgia, where residue of fermented grape juice has been found in ancient clay vessels, making wine one of humanity's earliest known intentionally fermented beverages. From those early origins, winemaking spread throughout the ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where it became deeply woven into religious ritual, medicine, and daily life; wine features prominently in the traditions of multiple major world religions, including Christian communion and Jewish Kiddush blessings, reflecting its long-standing symbolic as well as culinary significance. Over centuries, distinct regional winemaking traditions developed based on local grape varieties, climate, and soil, or "terroir," giving rise to the enormous diversity of wine styles produced today across countries like France, Italy, Spain, the United States, Argentina, Australia, and many others, each contributing distinctive character shaped by their specific growing conditions. On National Drink Wine Day, people celebrate by enjoying a glass of their preferred wine, trying a new varietal or region, or visiting a local winery or wine bar.
