National Waffle Day

National Waffle Day, observed March 25th in the United States, marks the anniversary of the first U.S. patent for a waffle iron, granted to Cornelius Swartwout of Troy, New York, on March 24, 1869, an invention that made producing the gridded, batter-based breakfast food far more practical and consistent for American home cooks. Waffles themselves have a much older international history, with predecessors dating back to medieval Europe, where wafer-like cakes were cooked between two hinged metal plates over an open fire, a technique that evolved differently across regions into the Belgian waffle, known for its deep pockets and yeast-leavened batter, and other European styles, before Dutch and Belgian immigrants brought waffle traditions to America. Belgian-style waffles gained significant popularity in the United States following their prominent presence at the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and again at the 1964 New York World's Fair, where Belgian waffle vendors introduced the format to a wide American audience, helping establish the deep-pocketed, toppings-friendly waffle style now common at American breakfast restaurants. Note that this U.S. observance is distinct from International Waffle Day, a separate holiday celebrated August 24th with roots in Swedish tradition.
