National Umbrella Day

National Umbrella Day, observed February 10th, celebrates one of humanity's oldest and most enduring inventions for staying dry, or shaded. Umbrellas date back thousands of years, with early versions documented in ancient Egypt, China, and Greece, where they were used primarily as sun shades and status symbols for royalty and the elite rather than rain protection. The adaptation of the umbrella specifically for rain is credited largely to Chinese innovation, with waxed or lacquered paper versions used for waterproofing appearing well over a thousand years ago. In 18th-century England, umbrellas for rain were initially seen as unmanly, since a gentleman was expected to take a covered carriage rather than walk exposed to weather, but the reformer Jonas Hanway is credited with popularizing rain umbrella use among British men in the 1750s despite considerable public ridicule at the time, gradually normalizing what is now an unremarkable everyday object. Modern umbrella design was further refined in the 19th and 20th centuries with steel ribs, folding mechanisms, and eventually the compact, spring-loaded designs common today. On National Umbrella Day, people celebrate by appreciating this everyday invention, checking that their umbrella is in good repair, or learning about its surprisingly long history.
