National Trivia Day

National Trivia Day, observed January 4th, celebrates the appeal of small, curious facts and the games built around them. The word "trivia" comes from the Latin for "three roads" or "crossroads," originally referring to common, unremarkable knowledge one might pick up at a public meeting point, before evolving in the 20th century to mean minor, esoteric facts, especially after Columbia University students began compiling trivia questions in the 1960s. Trivia exploded in popularity with games like Trivial Pursuit, launched in 1981, and later through pub quiz culture and television game shows such as Jeopardy!. Today trivia is a staple of bar nights, classroom icebreakers, party games, and online quiz apps. National Trivia Day encourages people to test and share their knowledge, whether through hosting or attending a trivia night, playing trivia-based board or video games, or simply learning a handful of new random facts to share with friends. Many bars, restaurants, and community organizations run special trivia events on or around the day, and it's a popular occasion for schools to run fun, low-stakes academic competitions.
