National Tartan Day

National Tartan Day, observed on April 6th, celebrates Scottish heritage and the contributions of Scottish Americans to the United States. The date commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320, a foundational document in which Scottish nobles asserted Scotland's independence from England, a text that some historians believe influenced the language of the American Declaration of Independence centuries later. The modern observance traces to Canada, where a similar Tartan Day was established in the 1980s by Scottish heritage organizations, before being adopted in the United States following a 1998 U.S. Senate resolution championed by Senator Trent Lott, himself of Scottish descent. The day recognizes the substantial Scottish and Scots-Irish influence on American history and culture, from signers of the Declaration of Independence to prominent figures in industry, science, and the military. Celebrations often include tartan-themed parades, most notably New York City's Tartan Day Parade up Sixth Avenue, along with bagpipe performances, Highland games, whisky tastings, and displays of clan tartans representing different Scottish family lineages. The holiday has grown steadily since its establishment, becoming an increasingly visible celebration of Scottish-American identity each spring.
