National Superhero Day

National Superhero Day, observed on April 28th, celebrates superheroes across comic books, film, television, and broader popular culture. The modern superhero genre traces its origins to the 1938 debut of Superman in "Action Comics" No. 1, created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, a character whose massive commercial success established many of the genre's foundational conventions, including a secret identity, extraordinary powers, and a strong moral code centered on protecting the innocent. Superman's success quickly inspired a wave of imitators and original characters throughout the following decades, giving rise to the major comic book publishers and expansive fictional universes, including DC Comics and Marvel Comics, that continue to dominate the genre today with characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and the Avengers. The genre experienced a massive resurgence in mainstream popularity beginning in the early 2000s and accelerating dramatically with the launch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2008, which transformed superhero films from a niche genre into one of the most commercially dominant categories in modern global cinema. Superheroes have also taken on significant cultural symbolism beyond entertainment, often embodying aspirational ideals of justice, courage, and self-sacrifice, while more recent works have increasingly explored morally complex characters and social themes.
