National Sticky Bun Day

National Sticky Bun Day, observed February 21st, celebrates the soft, spiraled yeast roll baked with a caramelized brown sugar, butter, and often pecan topping, then flipped upside down after baking so the sticky glaze coats the top. Sticky buns trace their American roots largely to Pennsylvania Dutch baking traditions, brought by German immigrant communities who settled in Pennsylvania starting in the 17th and 18th centuries and developed a rich tradition of yeasted sweet breads and rolls. Philadelphia in particular became closely associated with sticky buns, sometimes called "Philadelphia sticky buns," a regional specialty distinct from the more widely known cinnamon roll, primarily through its caramelized sugar-and-nut topping baked directly into the pan rather than a glaze drizzled on afterward. The technique of inverting the pan after baking, so the sticky caramelized topping that was on the bottom during baking ends up on top when served, is similar to the method used for other classic American baked goods like pineapple upside-down cake. Sticky buns remain a beloved brunch and bakery item, especially in the mid-Atlantic region.
