National Siblings Day

National Siblings Day, observed on April 10th, honors the unique and often lifelong bond between brothers and sisters. The holiday was founded by Claudia Evart, a New York resident who lost both of her siblings, a sister and a brother, in separate accidents at young ages. Motivated by grief and a desire to honor sibling relationships that are often overshadowed by other family-focused holidays like Mother's Day and Father's Day, Evart established the Siblings Day Foundation in the 1990s and campaigned for national recognition of the observance, choosing April 10th in honor of her late sister's birthday. Though it has never become an official U.S. federal holiday, the day has gained significant grassroots popularity, particularly through social media, where sharing childhood photos and heartfelt tributes to siblings has become a popular annual tradition. Psychologists note that sibling relationships are often among the longest-lasting bonds in a person's life, frequently outlasting relationships with parents and shaping social skills, conflict resolution abilities, and emotional development from an early age. The day serves as a reminder to reach out to siblings, whether through a phone call, a visit, a shared memory, or simply an expression of appreciation for a relationship that, for many, spans an entire lifetime.
