National Rum Day

National Rum Day, celebrated on August 16th, honors a spirit with a long and complex history deeply intertwined with Caribbean colonization, transatlantic trade, and naval tradition. Rum is distilled from sugarcane byproducts, primarily molasses, and its production traces back to the seventeenth-century Caribbean sugar plantations, where enslaved laborers first discovered that molasses, a byproduct of sugar refining, could be fermented and distilled into alcohol. The spirit quickly became deeply entangled with the transatlantic slave trade, forming a key component of the notorious "triangular trade" that connected European manufactured goods, African enslaved labor, and Caribbean sugar and rum production. Rum also holds a significant place in naval history, most notably through the British Royal Navy's centuries-long tradition of issuing sailors a daily rum ration, a practice that continued in various forms from the seventeenth century until it was formally discontinued in 1970 on what became known as "Black Tot Day." Today rum production spans the globe, from the Caribbean islands of Jamaica, Barbados, and Puerto Rico to Latin America and beyond, with styles ranging from light, clear rums often used in cocktails to dark, aged rums sipped like fine whiskey. Rum remains a foundational ingredient in classic cocktails including the mojito, daiquiri, piña colada, and mai tai.
