National Puzzle Day

National Puzzle Day, observed January 29th, celebrates puzzles of all kinds, from jigsaw puzzles and crosswords to logic puzzles, riddles, and brainteasers. Puzzles have entertained humans for centuries, with the jigsaw puzzle specifically credited to London mapmaker John Spilsbury, who around 1760 mounted a map onto wood and cut along country borders to create an educational geography tool for teaching children, only later becoming a purely recreational pastime as the format spread through the 19th and 20th centuries. Crossword puzzles, meanwhile, trace back to a "word-cross" puzzle published in the New York World newspaper in 1913, credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, which quickly became a staple of newspapers worldwide. Puzzles are valued not just for entertainment but for cognitive benefits, with research suggesting that regular puzzle-solving can support memory, problem-solving skills, and pattern recognition, which is part of why puzzles remain popular activities for both children's education and adult mental exercise well into old age. On National Puzzle Day, people celebrate by working on jigsaw puzzles, solving crosswords or sudoku, tackling logic puzzles, or introducing children to puzzle-based learning games.
