National Pretzel Day

National Pretzel Day, observed on April 26th, celebrates the twisted, salted baked dough snack with a long history stretching back over a thousand years. Pretzels are widely believed to have originated with European monks in the early Middle Ages, with one popular legend crediting a monk in southern France or northern Italy around 610 CE with shaping leftover bread dough into a design meant to resemble a child's arms crossed in prayer, giving the pretzel both its distinctive shape and its name, derived from the Latin "pretiola," meaning "little reward," reportedly given to children who successfully recited their prayers. Pretzels became closely associated with Germany and German-speaking regions of Europe, where they remain a major culinary tradition, and German immigrants brought the tradition to the United States, particularly to Pennsylvania, which became the historic center of American commercial pretzel production starting in the early 19th century. The distinctive dark brown, shiny crust of a traditional pretzel comes from a brief dip in a lye or baking soda solution before baking, a process called "lauging" that creates a unique chemical reaction on the dough's surface. Modern pretzels come in many forms, from soft, chewy mall and ballpark pretzels to crunchy, shelf-stable hard pretzels, alongside sweet variations coated in cinnamon sugar or chocolate. On this day, many pretzel chains and bakeries offer free or discounted pretzels to celebrate.
