Polar bears rely heavily on sea ice as a platform for hunting seals, their primary food source, and as Arctic ice cover shrinks and forms later in the year due to rising global temperatures, bears face longer fasting periods on land, reduced hunting opportunities, and increased physical stress, all of which threaten long-term population health. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies polar bears as a vulnerable species, and organizations like Polar Bears International, a nonprofit dedicated specifically to polar bear conservation and climate research, have promoted awareness days like this one to draw public attention to the connection between climate change and Arctic wildlife. February was chosen in part because it falls during the polar bear denning season, when pregnant female polar bears give birth to cubs in snow dens, making it a symbolically appropriate time to focus on the species' vulnerability and the next generation's uncertain future.
