National Piercing Day, observed on May 16th, celebrates body piercing as a form of personal adornment and self-expression, while also drawing attention to the practice's remarkably long history across human civilizations. Archaeological evidence indicates that ear and nose piercing date back thousands of years across numerous ancient cultures, including ancient Egypt, where pierced ears appear on royal artifacts and mummified remains, and various African, Asian, and Indigenous American cultures, where piercings often carried significant cultural, religious, or status-related meaning tied to rites of passage, tribal identity, or social rank. Body piercing in Western popular culture experienced significant waves of mainstream growth and acceptance during the late 20th century, particularly through punk and alternative subcultures in the 1970s and 1980s that embraced piercing as a form of countercultural expression, before piercings, especially ear piercings beyond a single lobe hole, gradually became increasingly normalized across broader mainstream fashion by the 1990s and 2000s.
