National Nylon Stocking Day

National Nylon Stocking Day, observed on May 15th, marks the anniversary of the 1940 nationwide debut of nylon stockings, a revolutionary product developed by chemical company DuPont that transformed women's fashion and represented one of the earliest major commercial successes of synthetic fiber technology. Prior to nylon's introduction, women's stockings were typically made from silk, an expensive material imported primarily from Japan that was prone to running and tearing easily, making nylon's greater durability, elasticity, and lower cost immediately appealing to consumers. DuPont chemist Wallace Carothers led the research team that developed nylon in the mid-1930s, and the company launched an enormous marketing campaign ahead of the stockings' nationwide release, generating such intense demand that stores nationwide reported massive crowds and stockings selling out within hours on their first day of general availability. The timing proved historically complicated, however, as America's entry into World War II just over a year later led the government to redirect nylon production toward military applications, including parachutes, ropes, and tents, causing significant civilian shortages and even contributing to the so-called "nylon riots" of 1945-46, when stores struggled to meet pent-up postwar consumer demand. Nylon stockings nonetheless permanently displaced silk as the dominant stocking material and helped establish DuPont and synthetic fibers as major forces in the textile and fashion industries.
