National Moscato Day

National Moscato Day, observed on May 9th, celebrates Moscato, a family of sweet, aromatic wines made from Muscat grapes, one of the oldest known grape varieties, believed to have been cultivated since ancient times and possibly related to the earliest domesticated grapevines. Muscat grapes are grown in wine regions across the world, but the grape reaches particular prominence in Italy's Piedmont region, where it forms the basis of Moscato d'Asti, a lightly sparkling, low-alcohol wine known for its distinctly floral, honeyed, and fruity aromatic profile featuring notes of peach, orange blossom, and apricot. Unlike many wines aged extensively before release, Moscato d'Asti is meant to be enjoyed young and fresh, prized for its bright, vibrant character rather than complex aging potential. The wine experienced a significant surge in popularity in the United States during the 2010s, driven partly by its approachable sweetness and gentle effervescence, which made it appealing to wine drinkers newer to the category, as well as its embrace within hip-hop and popular music culture, where it was frequently referenced. Because of its lower alcohol content and pronounced sweetness, Moscato is often served chilled as a dessert wine or paired with fruit-based desserts, though its versatility also makes it a popular choice for casual sipping and brunch gatherings.
