National Mango Day

National Mango Day, observed on July 22nd, celebrates mangoes, one of the most widely consumed and beloved fruits in the world, often referred to as the "king of fruits" in South Asia, where the fruit has been cultivated for thousands of years and holds deep cultural, religious, and culinary significance. Mangoes originated in South Asia, likely in the region spanning present-day India and Myanmar, and spread throughout Southeast Asia and eventually to Africa and the Americas through historical trade routes and colonial-era plant transport, becoming a globally significant tropical fruit crop grown across dozens of countries in warm climates today. India remains by far the world's largest mango producer, growing more mangoes than the rest of the world's producing countries combined, though the vast majority of Indian mango production is consumed domestically rather than exported, meaning many countries' mango markets rely more heavily on production from other major exporting nations including Mexico, Thailand, and Brazil. Mangoes come in hundreds of distinct cultivated varieties worldwide, ranging considerably in size, color, sweetness, and fiber content, from the small, intensely sweet Ataulfo variety to the large, fiberless Alphonso mango prized in Indian cuisine as one of the finest dessert mango varieties. The fruit's culinary applications span sweet and savory preparations worldwide, used fresh, in smoothies and desserts, pickled while unripe, or incorporated into savory dishes like chutneys and salsas.
