National Look-Alike Day, observed on April 20th, is a playful unofficial holiday celebrating the curious phenomenon of people who resemble each other despite having no known family relation, sometimes referred to as "doppelgängers," a German word roughly meaning "double walker" that has long carried an eerie folkloric connotation of seeing one's own uncanny double as an omen. Scientific interest in unrelated look-alikes gained a notable boost from a 2022 study conducted by researchers using photographs from a project by Canadian photographer François Brunelle, who spent years photographing pairs of strangers with striking physical similarities; the study found that some of these look-alikes shared more genetic similarities than expected by chance, suggesting that certain facial features may be more genetically constrained and therefore more likely to recur across unrelated individuals than previously assumed.
