National Lighthouse Day

National Lighthouse Day, observed on August 7th, commemorates the anniversary of the Lighthouse Act of 1789, one of the earliest pieces of legislation passed by the newly formed United States Congress, which placed the operation and maintenance of the nation's lighthouses under federal authority for the first time. Lighthouses have served as vital navigational aids for centuries, warning ships of dangerous coastlines, reefs, and shoals, and guiding vessels safely into harbors during storms and at night, long before modern GPS and radar technology rendered many of them functionally obsolete. The United States once had over a thousand active lighthouses guarding its extensive coastlines, staffed by dedicated lighthouse keepers who lived in often remote, isolated conditions to maintain the crucial beacons, a demanding and sometimes dangerous profession that largely disappeared by the late twentieth century as lighthouses became automated. Many historic lighthouses have since been preserved as museums, tourist attractions, or protected historic landmarks, celebrated for their architectural beauty and their role in maritime and coastal history. National Lighthouse Day is celebrated with tours of historic lighthouses, educational programs on maritime navigation history, and events hosted by lighthouse preservation societies working to protect these iconic coastal landmarks for future generations to appreciate.
