National Houseplant Appreciation Day, observed the second Friday of January each year, celebrates the greenery people keep indoors for both decoration and the genuine sense of calm and connection to nature many houseplants provide. Houseplant keeping as a widespread hobby has roots in Victorian-era England, when advances like the Wardian case, an early sealed glass terrarium invented in the 1830s, made it possible to keep delicate tropical plants alive indoors despite polluted city air and inconsistent heating, sparking a houseplant craze among the growing middle class. Interest in houseplants has surged repeatedly since then, notably during the 1970s "plant parent" boom and again in the 2010s and 2020s, driven partly by social media communities sharing plant care tips and rare or trendy species like the fiddle-leaf fig and various types of monstera. January's timing for the holiday makes practical sense, since it falls during the winter months when outdoor gardening is largely dormant in much of the Northern Hemisphere, making it a natural time to focus attention on indoor greenery instead. On National Houseplant Appreciation Day, people celebrate by repotting, pruning, or simply appreciating their existing plants, researching new varieties, or bringing a new plant into their home.
