National Honesty Day

National Honesty Day, observed on April 30th, promotes truthfulness and transparency in personal and public life, deliberately positioned at the opposite end of the month from April Fools' Day as a lighthearted counterbalance to a month that begins with pranks and hoaxes. The holiday was created in the early 1990s by M. Hirsh Goldberg, a former press secretary to the governor of Maryland and author of a book examining the cultural and social role of lying and deception. Goldberg conceived the day partly as a playful commentary on the idea that if society devotes a day to April Fools' pranks and deception, it deserves an equal and opposite observance dedicated to encouraging honesty, both in everyday interactions and in more significant matters like business, politics, and personal relationships. The observance touches on broader psychological and sociological research into honesty, which suggests that while most people value truthfulness in principle, small everyday lies, sometimes called "white lies," remain extremely common in daily social interactions, often told to spare others' feelings or smooth social situations. National Honesty Day encourages people to reflect on the role honesty plays in building trust in relationships, workplaces, and communities, and some observers use the occasion to make a deliberate effort to be especially candid and transparent in their interactions for the day, or to reflect on situations where more honesty could improve their relationships.
