National Homemade Soup Day, observed February 4th, celebrates soup made from scratch rather than store-bought or canned, timed to fall in the middle of winter when a warm bowl has the most appeal. Soup is considered one of humanity's oldest prepared foods, since it requires only a heat source and a vessel capable of holding liquid, a combination available to human cooks since at least the Neolithic period once pottery-making developed.
