National Hippo Day

National Hippo Day, observed February 15th, celebrates the hippopotamus, one of the largest land mammals in the world and a species native to sub-Saharan Africa's rivers and lakes. Despite their bulky, seemingly docile appearance and largely herbivorous diet, hippos are widely regarded as among the most dangerous large animals in Africa, responsible for more human fatalities annually than lions or crocodiles in many regions, largely due to their fierce territorial behavior around water and their surprising speed both in water and on land. Hippos spend most of their day submerged in rivers and lakes to keep their skin cool and protected from the sun, emerging mainly at night to graze on grasses, and their skin secretes a natural reddish, oily substance sometimes nicknamed "blood sweat," which acts as a sunscreen and antimicrobial protectant, not actual blood or sweat. Hippo populations have declined in parts of Africa due to habitat loss and poaching for their meat and ivory-like teeth, making conservation-minded appreciation part of the day's spirit for some observers. National Hippo Day, an informal fan-driven observance rather than a scientific or governmental one, is typically marked with awareness-raising social media posts, zoo visits, and simple appreciation of the animal.
