National Geographic Day

National Geographic Day, observed January 27th, marks the anniversary of the founding of the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C., on January 27, 1888, by a group of 33 explorers, scientists, and scholars who wanted to promote "the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge." The organization launched National Geographic magazine later that same year, which grew from a small scientific journal into one of the most recognizable publications in the world, renowned for its photojournalism, in-depth reporting on science, exploration, culture, and conservation, and its iconic yellow-bordered cover. Over more than a century, the Society has funded and supported thousands of scientific research and exploration projects, from Robert Peary's Arctic expeditions to Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research and Robert Ballard's discovery of the Titanic wreck. Beyond the magazine, National Geographic has expanded into television, documentary filmmaking, and educational programs that continue to shape public understanding of science, nature, and world cultures. On National Geographic Day, people celebrate by exploring back issues or documentaries, learning about a new place or scientific topic, or reflecting on the Society's long history of exploration and discovery.
