National Fudge Day

National Fudge Day, observed on June 16th, celebrates fudge, a dense, creamy confection typically made by heating sugar, butter, and milk or cream to a specific temperature before beating the mixture as it cools to create fine sugar crystals that give fudge its characteristic smooth, dense texture, distinct from the glassy texture of hard candy. Fudge's exact origin is genuinely disputed among food historians, but the most commonly repeated account traces it to American colleges in the late 19th century, particularly a possibly apocryphal story involving a batch of caramel that was accidentally "fudged," or botched, at Vassar College around 1888, giving rise to both the treat and its distinctive name, with women's colleges subsequently helping popularize fudge-making as a beloved social activity among students. Chocolate fudge became the most common and popular variety, though the confection comes in countless flavor variations including vanilla, peanut butter, maple, and mixed with nuts or other candy pieces. Fudge became strongly associated with tourist destinations, particularly Mackinac Island in Michigan, where fudge shops have operated since the late 19th century and the treat became such a signature local product that visitors to the island are sometimes jokingly referred to as "fudgies." On this day, fudge enthusiasts celebrate by making a batch at home or seeking out a favorite fudge shop.
