National Frozen Food Day

National Frozen Food Day, observed March 6th, celebrates the technology and convenience of frozen food, timed near the anniversary of the first commercial frozen food sale in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 6, 1930. That milestone came from Clarence Birdseye, an American inventor and entrepreneur who, after observing Inuit fishing and food preservation techniques while working in Labrador, Canada, in the 1910s, developed a method of flash-freezing food quickly at very cold temperatures, which forms much smaller ice crystals than slow freezing and better preserves food's texture, flavor, and nutritional quality upon thawing. Birdseye patented his flash-freezing process and founded a company that eventually became the Birds Eye brand, still recognizable in grocery store freezer aisles today. Frozen food transformed American grocery shopping and home cooking over the following decades, especially as home freezers and refrigerator-freezer combination units became standard household appliances by the mid-20th century, enabling everything from frozen vegetables and TV dinners to ice cream and pizza. Frozen food's convenience and reduced food waste, since items can be stored far longer than fresh equivalents, remain significant advantages today. On National Frozen Food Day, people celebrate by cooking with frozen ingredients or learning about the technology's surprisingly recent history.
