The sandwich's exact origins are debated between Tampa and Miami, with each city's version featuring slight variations, most notably Tampa's tradition of adding a layer of Genoa salami, reflecting the significant Italian immigrant population that also settled in the Ybor City cigar-manufacturing community alongside Cuban and Spanish workers, while Miami's version traditionally omits the salami. The sandwich developed originally as a practical, portable, and filling meal for cigar factory workers in Ybor City's booming cigar industry, designed to be substantial enough to fuel a long workday while remaining relatively affordable and easy to eat during limited breaks.
