National Croissant Day

National Croissant Day, observed January 30th, celebrates the flaky, buttery, crescent-shaped pastry made from a laminated yeast dough, a labor-intensive technique of folding butter into dough repeatedly to create dozens of thin layers. Despite being closely associated with French bakeries, the croissant's ancestor is generally traced to the Austrian "kipferl," a crescent-shaped bread that predates the French version by centuries, with legend attributing its shape to a celebration of a military victory over Ottoman forces, though the historical accuracy of that specific story is debated among food historians. The pastry is believed to have been introduced to France in the 19th century, where French bakers refined the laminated dough technique that gives the modern croissant its distinctive flaky, airy texture, quite different from the denser Austrian original. The croissant became an emblem of French bakery culture and, eventually, of French cuisine broadly, exported and adapted worldwide, including sweet and savory variations filled with chocolate, almond paste, ham and cheese, or other ingredients. On National Croissant Day, people celebrate by visiting a bakery for a fresh croissant or attempting the demanding laminated dough process at home.
