National Catfish Day

National Catfish Day, observed on June 25th, celebrates catfish, a freshwater fish with particular culinary and economic significance in the American South. Congress and President Ronald Reagan established the observance in 1987 to recognize the growing U.S. farm-raised catfish industry, which had developed particularly strongly in Mississippi and other Southern states beginning in the mid-20th century, transforming catfish farming into a significant regional agricultural industry providing jobs and economic activity across the Mississippi Delta region. Catfish has long held cultural and culinary significance in Southern American cuisine, traditionally prepared by coating fillets in seasoned cornmeal and deep-frying them until crispy, a preparation deeply associated with Southern soul food traditions, fish fries, and community gatherings. The rise of catfish farming, or aquaculture, in dedicated ponds beginning in the 1960s and 1970s significantly increased the fish's commercial availability and affordability compared to wild-caught catfish, while also raising food safety and quality standards through controlled farming conditions. The American catfish farming industry has faced significant economic competition in recent decades from imported farm-raised catfish and similar fish species from countries including Vietnam, prompting labeling regulations distinguishing genuine U.S. catfish from imported alternatives.
