National Bird Day

National Bird Day, observed on January 5th, is dedicated to raising awareness about the welfare and conservation of wild and captive birds. The modern observance was established in 2002 by the Avian Welfare Coalition and the Animal Protection Institute to draw attention to issues affecting birds, from habitat loss and the illegal wild bird trade to the welfare of parrots and other birds kept as pets, many of which are highly intelligent, long-lived, and require far more specialized care than casual owners often anticipate. The day encourages people to learn about bird species in their region, support conservation organizations, and consider the ethics of the exotic pet trade. Because early January often coincides with the Christmas Bird Count, a long-running citizen science survey started by the National Audubon Society in 1900, National Bird Day is often paired with birdwatching activities. Observances include going birdwatching, setting up bird feeders, visiting aviaries or wildlife sanctuaries, supporting bird rescue and rehabilitation organizations, and learning about endangered or threatened bird species around the world.
