National Battery Day

National Battery Day, observed February 18th, celebrates the invention of the battery, timed to coincide with the birthday of Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, born February 18, 1745. Volta invented the first true battery, known as the voltaic pile, in 1800, by stacking alternating discs of zinc and copper separated by cloth soaked in brine, creating the first device capable of producing a steady, continuous electric current, a major leap beyond earlier static electricity experiments and demonstrations. Volta's invention directly enabled a wave of scientific discovery in the early 19th century, since researchers finally had a reliable current source to conduct experiments in electrochemistry and electromagnetism, including work that eventually led to electrolysis and the isolation of several chemical elements. The unit of electric potential, the volt, is named in his honor, reflecting his foundational role in the field. Battery technology has advanced enormously since Volta's brine-soaked discs, progressing through lead-acid batteries in the 19th century to modern lithium-ion batteries that power today's phones, laptops, and electric vehicles, all of which trace their conceptual lineage back to Volta's original stacked-disc design.
