National Aviation Day

National Aviation Day, observed annually on August 19th, celebrates the development and achievements of aviation throughout American history. The date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of Orville Wright, who, along with his brother Wilbur, achieved the first sustained, controlled, powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903, an achievement that fundamentally transformed transportation and warfare in the twentieth century. The observance was officially established in 1939 by a presidential proclamation from Franklin D. Roosevelt, who called on Americans to observe the day with activities celebrating aviation's development and its significance to the nation. Since the Wright brothers' historic first flight, aviation has progressed at an extraordinary pace, from fragile wood-and-fabric biplanes to supersonic jets and modern commercial airliners capable of carrying hundreds of passengers across oceans in a matter of hours. The United States has played a central role in this evolution, from early aviation pioneers and the establishment of commercial airlines in the 1920s and 1930s to the aerospace innovations of the Cold War era and beyond, including the development of jet propulsion and the country's leading role in both civilian and military aviation technology. National Aviation Day is celebrated with air shows, museum events at aviation history sites, educational programs for young people interested in careers in aviation, and recognition of pilots, engineers, and others who have contributed to the field's development.
