Arbor Day

Arbor Day, observed on the last Friday of April in most of the United States, is dedicated to planting and caring for trees. The holiday was founded by journalist and politician J. Sterling Morton, who moved to the Nebraska Territory in 1854 and became a passionate advocate for tree planting on the largely treeless prairie landscape, both for practical purposes like windbreaks, shade, fuel, and building material, and for the broader aesthetic and environmental benefits trees provide. Morton proposed a tree-planting holiday to the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, and the first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872, with an estimated one million trees planted across the state on that single day. The observance spread to other states over subsequent decades, and by the early 20th century, Arbor Day was celebrated in some form across most of the country, though the specific date varies by state to accommodate different regional planting seasons and climates. National Arbor Day was officially proclaimed in 1970 by President Richard Nixon, permanently setting the national observance on the last Friday of April. Modern Arbor Day celebrations typically involve community tree-planting events, educational programs about the environmental benefits of trees, and recognition from organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation, which promotes reforestation and conservation efforts worldwide.
