National Apple Day

National Apple Day, observed on October 21st, celebrates apples and the remarkable diversity of apple varieties, orchards, and harvest traditions associated with autumn across many cultures. First established in Britain in 1990 by the environmental charity Common Ground, the observance was created partly to raise awareness about declining orchard biodiversity, as commercial apple production had increasingly concentrated on just a handful of popular varieties, threatening the survival of thousands of heritage apple cultivars developed over centuries of regional cultivation across Britain and elsewhere. The fruit's genetic diversity is remarkable, with thousands of distinct apple varieties developed over centuries, each offering different flavor profiles, textures, and culinary applications ranging from fresh eating to baking, cider production, and sauce making, though modern commercial markets typically offer only a small fraction of this historical diversity. National Apple Day promotes appreciation for heritage and lesser-known apple varieties, orchard conservation, and traditional harvest-time activities including apple picking, cider pressing, and seasonal baking.
