Loyalty Day

Loyalty Day, observed on May 1st in the United States, is a day set aside to reaffirm loyalty to the country and recognize the heritage of American freedom. The observance emerged in the early 20th century, initially known as "Americanization Day," as a way to celebrate immigrants becoming citizens, but it gained its current name and significantly more political weight during the early Cold War era, when Congress and veterans' organizations promoted it as a patriotic counterpoint to May Day, which is celebrated internationally as a workers' and, in many countries, a communist or socialist holiday. Congress formally established Loyalty Day in 1949 and made it a permanent observance in 1958, with the date deliberately chosen to coincide with, and symbolically counter, the international May Day tradition. Every U.S. president has issued an annual Loyalty Day proclamation since its establishment, typically emphasizing themes of patriotism, constitutional government, and national unity. Unlike many federal observances, Loyalty Day carries no paid holiday status and receives comparatively little public attention or organized commemoration today compared to its more prominent Cold War-era observance, though some veterans' organizations and municipalities continue to hold small ceremonies or flag-raising events.
