International Women's Day

International Women's Day, observed March 8th, is a globally recognized observance celebrating women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements while advocating for continued progress toward gender equality. Its roots trace to the early 20th-century labor movement, including a 1908 garment workers' march in New York City demanding better pay and working conditions, and a 1909 National Woman's Day observance organized by the Socialist Party of America. The idea for an international version was proposed by activist Clara Zetkin at an international socialist women's conference in 1910, leading to the first International Women's Day observances in several European countries in 1911. The United Nations began officially recognizing the day in 1975, during International Women's Year, which helped formalize its observance worldwide and broaden its focus to include women's rights advocacy across all countries and cultures, not solely its original labor-movement origins. Today the day is marked very differently across the world, ranging from formal political and advocacy events highlighting gender pay gaps, reproductive rights, and workplace equality, to more commercialized traditions in some countries where it's marked with flowers and gifts similar to Mother's Day. Each year the UN and various organizations promote a specific thematic focus. On International Women's Day, people celebrate by attending advocacy events, honoring influential women, or supporting organizations focused on gender equality.
