International Museum Day

International Museum Day, observed on May 18th, celebrates museums worldwide and highlights their essential role in education, cultural exchange, and the preservation of humanity's shared artistic, historical, and scientific heritage. The observance was established in 1977 by the International Council of Museums, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the museum profession, with the goal of raising public awareness about museums' significance as institutions of learning and cultural dialogue that extend well beyond simply displaying artifacts and artwork. Each year, the International Council of Museums selects a theme for the observance, addressing issues ranging from sustainability and climate change to the role of technology in museums, or reckoning with difficult and complex histories such as colonialism and cultural repatriation. Participating museums worldwide, spanning art, history, science, and specialty museums of virtually every kind, often mark the day with free admission, extended hours, special exhibitions, guided tours, and educational programming aimed at increasing accessibility and public engagement, particularly targeting communities or individuals who might not otherwise regularly visit museums due to cost or other barriers. The observance has grown considerably since its founding, with tens of thousands of museums across more than a hundred countries now participating annually, reflecting the day's role in reinforcing museums' broader social mission as accessible public institutions of education, memory, and cultural connection.
