International Mountain Day

International Mountain Day, observed annually on December 11th, is a United Nations observance raising global awareness of the ecological, economic, and cultural importance of mountain ecosystems, along with the significant challenges facing the communities who call these often remote and rugged regions home. Established following the United Nations' designation of 2002 as the International Year of Mountains, the observance highlights how mountains cover roughly a quarter of the Earth's land surface and provide critical freshwater resources for more than half of humanity, despite mountain regions themselves being home to a comparatively small fraction of the global population.
